Earth Day – Happy or Not?

its a feeling …

The commercialisation of caring for our planet has given rise to a global day of awareness on April 22nd - Earth Day. The familiar vowel-chime of “Happy Birthday” has, in some ways, become the hook used to promote this occasion, encouraging people to appreciate the life and ecosystem of our precious home. And yet, in essence, the idea of a “Happy” Earth Day can feel like a contradiction.

Observed each year on April 22nd, Earth Day symbolises environmental protection and restoration. First held in 1970, it has grown into a worldwide movement, coordinated through Earthday.org (formerly Earth Day Network), with more than a billion people across over 193 countries engaging in environmental activism and conservation efforts.

While I deeply appreciate the commitment of the many who give their time cleaning up, restoring, and caring for the environment on this day or the surrounding weekends, I can’t help but wonder: are we, in some ways, enabling human negligence and irresponsibility?

There is a growing culture within the developed world that accepts pollution at almost every level. Corporations, with the means to produce vast quantities of wasteful packaging, often return only a small portion of their profits to address the consequences of their output. Alongside this sits a consumer culture shaped by quiet resignation … “Why bother? I don’t make a difference.”

I say this not to diminish the importance of Earth Day, but because I would truly love it to be a happy event. In reality, it often reflects the hard work of a minority cleaning up after the habits of the majority. In our daily lives, mindfulness is not only about what we achieve, but also about how we complete the cycle … tidying, restoring, and taking responsibility for what remains. Too often, it is only the achievement that is celebrated, while the care that follows is overlooked. This is a salient point in the development of a higher consciousness.

. . . “We must be mindful of our impact on the world around us, and in our appreciation of life, endeavour to minimise the footprint we leave behind.”

Right now, humanity is moving through a time of profound change. One of the most meaningful ways we can shape a positive future is through the parenting of our children. A powerful realisation in this is that we, as parents, model the behaviour we wish to see. Rather than instructing or enforcing, we can demonstrate … showing what it means to care for our environment through our own actions, creating spaces that reflect respect, order, and awareness.

. . . Through mindful presence, we recognise our impact on the world around us. In the simple act of how we live each day, we begin to model a gentler way - one that softens our footprint upon the Earth.

Another essential shift lies within the corporate world. If the purpose of business is to serve the public, then the profit it generates carries a shared responsibility. Environmental impact cannot be dismissed in the pursuit of margins. True service includes accountability, for both the product and its consequences.

. . . In mindful awareness of our place within the greater whole, we come to value life more deeply. From that understanding, we are called to act responsibly, and to walk lightly upon the Earth.

I look forward to the day when I can say, “Happy Earth Day” with the same genuine joy as “Happy Birthday” … a day that marks the birth of a new way of living, where all people have the opportunity to experience a full and meaningful life.

Earth Day is not only about physical action. It is also a time to reconnect—to feel our relationship with Mother Earth and with Nature. It is, in many ways, a feeling. We are already connected. The invitation is simply to bring that awareness into our hearts, and to honour it by caring for the Earth as she cares for us.
